Supporting Parents of Competitive Players is aimed at coaches with an interest in enhancing their knowledge and understanding around supporting parents of players that are embarking on the competition journey.
By the end of this course, coaches will:
- Understand the roles and challenges facing tennis parents in supporting the development of their child.
- Understand the psychological demands and benefits of tennis, so that you can educate parents.
- Have knowledge on effective communication behaviours and ways to better support parents and players pre, during, and post-competition.
- Be able to provide practical support to parents within your programme and signpost to further learning they can undertake.
The course content has been written by Professor Chris Harwood (Loughborough University) and Dr Sam Thrower (University of Roehampton). The content is based on extensive research within the field of sport parenting, and sits alongside the LTA’s “Competition Parenting” workshop which supports tennis parents directly.
The course explore the roles of tennis parents, the three basic psychological needs of a developing child/athlete, and pre, during and post-match communication. Coaches will be better equipped to help parents optimise their child's involvement in competition settings - as well as enhancing the child’s enjoyment, participation and development in tennis long term.
