Rothesay Open Nottingham 2024: Marcus Willis & John Peers crowned men’s doubles champions

• 2 MINUTE READ

Top seeds Marcus Willis and John Peers lifted their first doubles title together at the Rothesay Open Nottingham on Sunday afternoon.

The British, Australian duo beat Harold Mayot and Luke Saville 6-1, 6-7(1), 10-7 in an hour and 32 minutes in front of a packed-out crowd on Centre Court.

In what has been a stellar season so far for the 33-year-old Briton, this win marks his sixth ATP Challenger Tour doubles trophy and the first of his career on the grass.

“Big thanks to everyone for coming out today,” Smith said. “It’s been a tough week with weather but the crowd support has been unbelievable.

“Well done to our opponents, they actually had to play four matches unlike ourselves, some strong wins in there and I’m sure it’s not the last time we’ll see them.

“Thanks to John for playing with me – he messaged me last Thursday and it took me all of about one second to say yes. I’ve learnt a lot this past week so thanks to him for showing me the ropes.

“I’ve been coming to Nottingham since I was 14/15 so I’ll always keep coming back.”

Willis – who famously came through qualifying to face Roger Federer in the second round of Wimbledon in 2016 – will break into the top 100 ATP doubles ranking for the first time on Monday.

Former world No.2 Peers entered the tournament as the highest ranked player and showed his experience in the deciding match tie-break. The Australian showed brilliant hands at the net on championship point with a pinpoint volley winner to seal the victory.

“I haven’t been back here for a while, but to come here is always fun,” Peers said. “Big thanks to Marcus, but also to my girls (his kids). I know you don’t get to come on the road much and it’s been great fun having you here.”
